Master Basho’s staff
Master Basho said to his disciples, “If you have a staff, I will give one to you. If you have no staff, I will take it away from you!”
Student: “What did Master Basho mean?”
Master: “He showed off his staff.”
Student: “What is it like?”
Master: “A staff.”
Commentary:
A staff!
You can’t own it, nor can you give it away.
