Xuefeng’s Size of the World
Xuansha was once told by Xuefeng, “The size of the world is ten feet. The size of the ancient mirror is ten feet.” Xuansha pointed to the fireplace and said, “What is the size of the fireplace?” Xuefeng said, “It is as large as the ancient mirror.” Xuansha said, “The tips of your feet have not yet touched the ground.”
Student: “Xuefeng said that the size of the world is the same the size of the ancient mirror as ten feet. Why is the former the same size as the latter?”
Master: “Because both are one.”
Student: “How large is ten feet?”
Master: “One foot.”
Commentary:
The shape of a container is one thing and the taste of the contents in it is another.
