Your looking to the outside and pursuing it in a flurry is already wrong. If you only think of seeking Buddha, then Buddha is a mere name. Do you know what it is that you are running to seek?
Commentary:
‘Your looking to the outside and pursuing it’ implies following words and forms. ‘If you only think of seeking Buddha, then Buddha is a mere name’ means that we should not be deluded by the illusion of Buddha while picturing a glorious image of Buddha. Buddha is just a name to be used for the sake of convenience in order to express the formless and nameless perfect true-Self. In fact, Emptiness, the true-Self, Oneness and the Dharma are just names to be employed to express It. ‘Do you know what it is that you are running to seek?’ means that you are none other than the Buddha that you are running to seek. In other words, you should stop yourself from running to seek Buddha because running to seek Buddha is making Buddha seek Buddha.
Student: “What is the Buddha?”
Master: “Why do you ask me about him while you are showing him now?”
Student: “What do you mean? I am showing nothing.”
Master: “That’s it.”
